Know where your identity is?
Americans worry about identity theft, with good reason. About 5 percent of us — 11.7 million people — age 16 or older have been victims of identity theft over the last two years, most often through unauthorized use of a credit card.
The good news, if any: Only about 25 percent of those victims lost any money, and half of them lost only $200. But the average out-of-pocket loss was $1,870; identity theft costs a total of about $17 billion in the United States, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics
