INSURANCE FRAUD AWARENESS WEEK
August 15th to August 19, 2011
Insurance fraud is one of the largest and most damaging economic crimes in our state. These swindles cost Indiana untold millions of dollars every year. They drive up premiums for honest citizens and businesses throughout Indiana, contribute to the breakdown of law and order, and help drain the economic vitality of our state.
Insurance fraud comes in many forms, ranging from small scams by normally honest people to large and vicious swindles by criminal gangs.
It can involve padding a homeowner’s theft claim for a few thousand dollars to staged car accidents by criminal gangs that steal millions of dollars. It can involve torching a home or business for insurance money, making false injury claims against a local business’s workers compensation policy, selling fake health policies to trusting residents, or even killing people for life insurance funds.
The Indiana Chapter of the International Association of Special Investigation Units (IASIU) and the Indiana Chapter of the National Society of Professional Insurance Investigators (NSPII) are comprised of experienced insurance fraud investigators and various local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and prosecutors dedicated to the fight against insurance fraud.
After the request of both associations Governor Mitch Daniels has proclaimed August 15th to August 19th “Insurance Fraud Awareness Week” in the State of Indiana.
